University study and a good salary: Do this goes always together?

When talking to students why they chose this or that academic career, they often answered that it will allow them to have a high salary later. Those who put the promising salary prospects too much in the center of their studies are often not very happy. "Heart and a right portion of passion" are essential when studying, the choice of your university course is likely to have a lifelong effect on your life.

Looking at the entrance salaries of each single industrial sector and degrees, clear trends can be defined. Here is a selection for a first orientation:

Ranking: The most attractive entry-level salaries 2016
Pos.
University degree as.. gross annual salary
[ avarage amount in EURO ]
1
chemists / process engineer 54.000
2
business manager in the manufacturing sector 52.000
3
engineering scientists 51.000
4
medical professionals 50.000
5
scientists 49.000
6
management trainees in the retail sector 36.000
7
linguist and cultural scientist 33.000
8
business manager in tourism and culture 32.000
9
social scientists and humanities scholar 32.000
10
architects, receptionists, graphic designer and web designer with exam / certificate 31.000

An employer is always expecting a good grade. If a specialization, additional know-how and practical experience are provided on top, the better! It helps to stand out from the mass of candidates. It is obvious that it generally helps to have better job opportunities and a more favorable negotiating position when the comes to discussions about the salary. Star points among candidates are multilingualism: your native language + English + German enriched by several weeks abroad.

Please note that the salaries shown above are only a reference value or an average number. Other factors, too significantly influence the entrance salary:

  • company size
  • location / location competition
  • business environment / growth industry branch
  • function / responsibility
  • above-average exam / honors-level exam
  • doctorated
  • international experience

Apropos "salary" in job interviews in Germany we speak about the gross annual salaries. This includes all taxes and insurances, as health insurance and the state pension scheme.

If somebody wants to know exactly how much = net amount, will be on your account at the end of the month, get in contact with your future boss or the HR department and ask them for a sample calculation.
