Job interviews in German - questions about strengths & weaknesses

In the book "Business Etiquette in Germany", the topic "job interview in Germany" has already been covered by an individual chapter but new questions and uncertainties are emerging in practice and in application strategies. The self-reflection of the applicants is regularly examined with questions about "strengths and weaknesses". Why this is important and which questions and answers are advisable will be discussed in our article.

Bewerbungsgespräche auf Deutsch – Fragen nach Stärken & Schwächen

When doing job interviews in German, the uncertainties are often focused around the highly popular questions "What are their greatest strengths? ... and what your weaknesses?

The answer to this question seems important to many HR managers and bosses, because a discussion about strengths and weaknesses seems to reveal something of the candor and authenticity of the candidate.

Our tip: Do not worry too much about the terms "my strength - my weakness" in the depths of your psyche, always having the fear to mention something wrong or negative about myself! Better: You bring this question in context with some practical aspects of the workplace and say, for example:

"Let me answer this question best in the form by telling you where I can imagine to make a significant contribution to your company."

This way you have a great opportunity to put your strengths in the right focus. During the preparation for the interview you should have already formulated an answer based on the job and company profile.

In order to do something for an overall positive mood, you could start your response with an appreciation about the company and link it with your own strengths:

  • "Looking at your organizational structure, I found very impressive..."
  • "When I saw that you have the function of" ... " in your organization, I was very impressed, because ...
  • "In a report about the product xy, the department with the innovation yxy was also mentioned, I immediately thought: I would like to take part of ..."

If you were asked for a certain ability, you should take the opportunity to tell a little story in which this ability has been exemplary demanded and you could demonstrate your competence. So you have the chance to be more convincing than just answering the question: "An example of my ability xy is ...."

These and other questions and aspects of the application interview are regularly part of our trainings."The jon interview in Germany". Here are the details about the trainings: Learn-german.com/Job-interview-in-Germany
