Tips for the cover letter - part I -
A letter as a call
The cover letter (German: Anschreiben or Bewerbungsschreiben) should arouse the employer's interest and is an invitation to meet you in person.

In the content you should explain concisely on a single A4 page why you are the ideal candidate for the intended job and what skills and experience make you a suitable candidate. The following design rules have proved successful:
- easily copmrehensible text, clear messages, not in the subjunctive
- short sentences, no repetitions
- design clearly, form paragraphs
- font: Arial or Verdana, font size 11pt., justified
- pay attention to rules for hyphenation
- Margins: top: 1.69 cm, bottom: 1.69 cm, Left: 2.41 cm, right: 2.00 cm
- no use of abbreviations like "z.B.", "Betr.", "Bez." or "z. Hd."
- Apart from these, some rules which used to be standard practice have changed:
- No more blank line in the address field of the recipient, which previously seperated street and place, no bold print
- Date without mention of the location, example: no longer "Bamberg, 07.12.2015" or "Bamberg, den 07.12.2015". write only the date, eg. "07.12.2015"
- telephone numbers with area code and extension separated by a space, example: 0951 1234567 or +49 951 1234567
Further and more detailed design guidelines for a proper formal letter can be found in DIN 5008 .
